Irrigation is an agrotechnical measure in plant production which adds the necessary amounts of water for optimal growth and development of plants. The basic natural factors on which the quantity, quality and reliability of plant production depend are soil, water and climate. For our climatic conditions, the main source of water in the soil is rainfall, so for irrigation purposes, precipitation data are primarily considered. On the territory of the Republic of Croatia we have two water areas: the water area of the Danube River and the Adriatic water area. With the adoption of NAPNAV, the foundations have been laid for the development of irrigation in the Republic of Croatia. In the Adriatic water area, the Split-Dalmatia and Zadar counties have the most recorded irrigated land, while the Lika-Senj County have the least. The largest area of all classes of agricultural soil suitability for irrigation has the Split-Dalmatia County, while the smallest has the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Reclamation units of priority for irrigation and soil management – agricultural land, are defined by analysis and purposeful interpretation of pedological and hydropedological indicators as well as evaluation of the suitability of agricultural land for irrigation. Sources of water for irrigation in the Adriatic water area can be: groundwater, water from watercourses, lakes and springs, water accumulated in natural and artificial accumulations.
