The number of vehicles is constantly increasing and, consequently, the level of environmental noise from road traffic is increasing. This can have a negative impact on people and cause problems with hearing and concentration, sleep disturbance, stress, anxiety, fatigue, etc. More attention should be paid to noise protection measures, and the aim of this paper is to present roundabout intersections as one of possible ways of reducing road traffic noise levels. 12 measurements were performed at 4 locations in the town of Varaždin. The selected locations were 2 roundabouts and 2 classic traffic light intersections. At each location 30-minute measurements were carried out at 9 a.m., 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. Cars, trucks, buses and motorbikes that passed during that time were counted to determine traffic density. The obtained measurement results show the advantages of roundabouts in comparison to standard intersections from the point of view of noise emission level. The difference between measured values at Location 1 (roundabout) and at Location 2 (traffic light intersection) reaches up to 7.7 dB, which is a huge difference considering that the measurements were carried out along the same route with similar traffic flows. There is also a big difference between the measured values when Location 3 (intersection) and Location 4 (roundabout) are compared and it is 4.8 dB. These measurements show that roundabouts can contribute to noise reduction in urban areas.
