Seismic isolation is an active strategy to protect buildings from earthquakes in a way that separates the movement of the structure from the movement of the foundation and subsoil. In this way, the effects of an earthquake on the building and its destructive consequences are reduced. Although it appeared relatively recently, seismic isolation in the form of bearings is becoming an increasingly better alternative to the classical measures of protection of buildings from earthquakes - conceptual design. In this paper, in addition to the theoretical background, which includes the basic dynamic parameters of the structure and the method of determining the seismic action, two basic systems of seismic isolators are also covered: elastomeric and sliding bearings. The effectiveness of seismic isolation with elastomeric bearings is analysed as follows. In order to compare the internal forces and displacements of the classical and isolated construction, two numerical models of a five-storey masonry building were created using the ETABS 20 software package. The elastomeric isolators were designed according to current standards.
