Glass is a material that recently became increasingly important in the construction industry, often as a structural material. The facade lining as the face of the building is an essential aesthetic part. In addition to the aesthetic requirements, the glass lining must be functional, that is, energy efficient with as much light transmittance and as little energy loss as possible. Glass facades are an indispensable part of today's buildings because of their modern and attractive appearance, and they are made of aluminum profiles adapted exclusively for the production of glass facades. It is a modern lining system, most commonly used for office buildings. Lately, glass cladding is also adorned with exclusive residential buildings. The paper gives historical overview of the development of glass and glass structures and examples of some of the earliest glass structures. The various types of glass used in various places are also described. Choosing the right glass is one of the major requirements in designing glass lining and depends on many factors. The paper describes the division of glass facades most commonly used in construction, and their advantages and disadvantages with technical details and drawings.
