In engineering practice, pipelines are often used to transport various liquids such asmwater, oil, gas and others. During the transport of these fluids, mechanical energy is lost. Of course, the energy does not disappear, but only convert into the internal energy, which means that the temperature of the fluid increases. This increase in fluid temperature does not have much significance in the operation of the pipeline. Since this transfer of energy to the internal is irreversible, it results in a drop in pressure in the pipeline, i.e. mechanical energy losses. This loss is due to the viscosity of the fluid and the roughness of the pipe’s inner surface through which the fluid flows. Such energy loss is called major (hydraulic) head loss. Based on many tests, empirical equations have been obtained that show the dependence major losses on certain properties. Experiments have confirmed that major losses are a function of flow regime, relative roughness and fluid viscosity. For example, dependence on flow regime is seen in the fact that major head loss is larger during turbulent flow. Also the major losses will be higher in the pipe of higher relative roughness.
