In this thesis the basic application of glass materials in construction is shown. Firstly, some basics about glass and its chemical components are mentioned. Then the history of glass is explained through the Old Age, the Middle Ages, Renaissance Period, Early Modern Period and the Modern Period. The discovery of glass is touched upon, as well as ancient production of glass and important centers for the production itself. In the following chapter the process of production is analysed in great detail and the difference between polished plate glass and rolled plate glass is shown. Even though there are a variety of glass types, the classification consists of windowed, facade, hardened, reinforced and fibrous glass. Also in this thesis, the use of glass in construction for the production of construction elements is stated. Construction elements that are analysed in detail are windows, doors, glazed walls, walls, floors, facades, roofs, load-bearing structures and thermal insulation. Finally, the use of glass in construction is looked upon through the example of the Glass House in New Canaan by architect Philip Johnson.
