Children and adolescents who contact chat are reporting more complex psychosocial difficulties, and children and adolescents who self-injure prefer communication through chat. The focus of this research was to determine social, family and psychological variables of children and adolescents who self-injure and are seeking help through chat counseling. Based on 24 chats from Brave Phone’s database, labeled as counseling with a problem of self-injury, that were analyzed qualitatively, the research showed that children and adolescents face problems in all three areas of their lives. They are not satisfied with the availability and efficiency of social support, nor are they satisfied with the support of people in schools – teachers and psychologists. They report bad experiences when talking to them. Additionally, children describe the domestic relationships between parents as negative and feel likewise about their personal relationship with their parents. They do not get support from them. Some children are victims of emotional and physical abuse and neglect. Most parents don’t know about self-injury and those who do know had an inappropriate reaction. Five children reported suicidal thoughts. Hopelessness, helplessness, numbness, loneliness, and guilt were the most reported emotions. Children report being unhappy with themselves, having low self-esteem and high levels of self-criticism. Emotional regulation was most often mentioned as a function of self- injury and cutting as a means of self-injury. This behavior was described as an addiction. Although it is necessary to provide better support to children and adolescents who self-injure in their real environment, chat counseling will stay an important source of support for many of them. Therefore, it would be useful to explore this area in the future as well as enhance the quality of chat counselling and other means of intervention.
