The paper deals with a comparative analysis of the intermediate elements in the novel 1984 by George Orwell. The intermediate elements are observed from the standpoint of post-structuralist ideas about a textual relationship to earlier texts and with no literary systems of meaning. An intermediate relationship is such a relationship between the two media in which one assumes the characteristics of another for the purpose of its own expansion, innovation, acquisition of new meaning or approximation to a certain audience, etc., at the same time each of the media remains recognizable. The way of establishing intermediate relations depends on the nature of each media and their compatibility with one another. One of the intermediate relationship between literature and film is adaptation. A film adaptation is the transfer of a written work, in whole or in part, to a feature film or the name of a film based on a literary work. Due to the adjustments to film media and the director's ideas, adaptation is always an interpretation of a literary work. The first part of the relationship is observed from the transmission of intermediate elements in a literary work via representations of reality through the communications media, whose combination allows for expansion of the meaning of a literary work. The purpose of intermediate elements in a novel is to alert to the possibility of a totalitarian future in reality, if we do not recognize and eliminate this danger timely. The second part of the relationship is observed through the transfer of the intermediate elements from literary works in the medium of film. Due to the structural differences between the media of literature and the media of film, a film cannot be the literal transcription of a novel. Due to the fact that the film can trigger strong emotions from the viewer in a very direct, authentic and convincing way, which is not possible in the medium of literature and other arts, the impression of the message from the novel 1984 is expected to have an even stronger impact. The paper analyzes adaptations of novel 1984 from the years 1956 and 1984 and the short film Me and the Big Guy. Adaptations strive towards the faithful transfer of intermediate elements of the novel with an aspiration to improve the perception of the use of film method. Me and the Big Guy is a parody and intermediate elements of the novel are used symbolically for their own purposes.
