The biopsychosocial model and its use in approaching the patient with hypertension helps us to look at the patient in its entirety, considering his biological, psychological and social circumstances. Arterial hypertension is a chronically elevated blood pressure condition and requires lifelong treatment. It can be primary or essential (almost 85-95% of cases) and secondary. The causes of hypertension may be numerous and range from biological (age, gender, genetic disorders, metabolic disorders, etc.) to psychosocial (mental disorders, stress, socioeconomic status, etc.). For a proper diagnosis of hypertension and to detect its cause, it is necessary to properly measure the pressure, take a good anamnesis, perform lab tests, make a physical examination and, if necessary, carry out further tests. Therapeutic approach is adapted to the patient. The goal of each treatment for arterial hypertension is to lower the blood pressure below 140/80 mmHg while the recommended values for diabetic and renal patients is less than 130/80 mmHg. The first step in the treatment is to educate the patient about his illness and improve the co-workers in the treatment. If we see that the patient has some psychological problems, psychological support may be advised. The cornerstone stone in the treatment of each hypertension patient is a change of life habits, while the initation of pharmacotherapy depends not only on the values of the pressure but also on other risk factors, diseases and damage of the target organs. The antihypertensive agents used are: diuretics, beta blockers, calcium antagonists, ACE inhibitors and aldosterone receptor blockers.
