Pain as a negative experience leads to the development of dental fear in children. DF as dominant factor makes dental medical procedures really difficult to conduct and, consequently, it can lead to the rejection of cooperation and the deterioration of oral health. If it is not recognized and properly treated it can develop into DA. The amount of DF and DA can be objectively measured using VPT, FIS and the CFSS-DS. It is extremely important that a doctor of dental medicine understands the normal behaviour of children in certain age because it is the only way to detect anomalies in the behaviour and only way he can properly approach to each child. There are many factors that affect child's behaviour. Behaviour can be classified according to Frankl’s behaviour scale and by Wright’s categories. Frankl distinguishes clearly negative, slightly negative, slightly positive, and clearly positive behaviour. Wright divides behaviour into cooperative behaviour, lack of cooperative skill and potentially uncooperative behaviour. Potentially uncooperative behaviour can be: uncontrolled ("hysterical"), defiant (stubborn), shy, tensely cooperative, tearful and stoic behaviour. Most common methods in controlling behaviour are psychological approach consisting of methods that shape behaviour, "tell – show – do” method and the method of reinforcement, demonstration, desensitization and restraint.
