At the periodic table of elements, about 40 elements belongs to heavy metals. Today, they are one of the biggest pollutants of the environment and affect all living beings that live in such environment. Heavy metals have the ability to accumulate in the ecosystem and their content increases within the food chain. The research was conducted as biomonitoring of heavy metals: Cr(VI), Cd, Ni, Pb, Al, Ti and Hg in hair samples of humans as the highest link of the food chain. The ICP-MS method is used for the analysis of heavy metals (Cr(VI), Cd, Ni, Pb, Al and Ti), while the AMA analyzer is used to measure the concentration of Hg. The research included 121 respondents, distributed in different age groups, equally represented of both sexes at coastal and continental part of Croatia. The proportion of heavy metal concentration was also compared with eating habits, living near heavy industry and smoking habits. The research results show that there is a difference in the proportion of heavy metals depending on age and gender. Also, it was determined that there are differences in the proportion of heavy metals depending on the living in different part od the country, consumption of fish products and living near heavy industry. Smoking habits affect the proportion of certain heavy metals, but the concentration is not statistically significantly related to the smoking habit. Such research is a useful tool for monitoring the impact of the environment on humans, and it is necessary to carry it out in the future as well. This kind of research proved to be very useful for tracking the impact of environment on humans.
