Breast volume is one of the most important parameters in breast surgery. As it is a clinically objective measurement, knowing the exact volume of a breast is useful when planning aesthetic and reconstructive surgical procedures in order to get the best possible results. Numerous methods and ways of determining breast volume have been described in literature, but lack in their accuracy and effectiveness hinders the possibility of finding a universally accepted method. Besides it being accurate, the method should satisfy other characteristics. It should be economical, consume little time, be acceptable to patients and surgeons and should pose little risk to the patient. This paper offers a systematic review of literature in order to examine various breast volume measurement techniques and assess their accuracy and effectiveness in clinical practice. The methods are divided in several categories, according to the volume measurement mechanism: the anthropometric method, the Archimedes (water displacement) method, mostly used as gold-standard, methods that use medical diagnostic devices, three-dimensional (3-D) methods and other methods. Three-dimensional methods stood out as methods of choice, but when comparing the price and speed of the procedure the Grossman-Roudner device proved to be a more economical option.
