Shame is one of the most powerful human emotions. Shame experience is uncomfortable and painfull, sometimes even unbearable, which is why it often evokes different defensive mechanisms in order to make it less painful, or it is replaced by some other emotions that are more bearable. Shame is both moral and self-consciouss emotion. The existance of shame is more than necessary for social and cultural maintenance and development because of its role in preventing social transgressions and securing abidance to cultural norms. Shame and guilt are two different emotions that are often used interchangeably. Shame can be expressed through specific physical manifestations. It is hard to verbalize shame and because of its tendency to stay hidden and unrecognized, it can present a major problem in therapy. Many patients with different conditions, such as eating disorders, depression or patological narcissism, suffer from underlaying unrecognized shame. Shame is a result of negative evaluation of certain aspect of self or one's entire self and it can have either immobilizing effect or it can provoke anger and aggressive behaviour. Chronic and intensive shame experience may cause severe psychic pain and lead to suicide. Due to negative effects which are caused by patological forms of hidden shame, it is important to consider possible existance of such emotion, and if it exists to recognize, adress, and work through it, and therefore treat it.
