In this study, it was demonstrated that BPC 157 increased the blood flow through the collateral circulation from the ligation site and acted protectively on the tissues. On animal model of the complete ligature with surgical suture of the abdominal aorta (distal from the starting point of the right iliolumbar artery and proximal to the bifurcation of the abdominal aorta), the examination was done on, the effect of BPC 157 (10 μg/kg i.p.) in treatment, in pre-treatment BPC 157 dissolved in a drinking water at a dose of 10 μg/kg p.o. (0.25 μg/ml, 12 ml/rat/day for 7 days prior to ligation). For control, an equivalent volume of 0.9% NaCl (treatment) and drinking water (pretreatment) was used. Tests were conducted on female Wistar rats, 10 animals in each group (altogether 160 animals) at time intervals of 1min, 1h, 6h, and 24h. Collateral circulation was analyzed using digital subtraction angiography (DSA), while the number of blood vessels in the colon and uterus were analyzed using a micro camera. The walking test was performed in groups at intervals of 6 h and 24 h. After sacrificing, samples were taken for pathohistological analysis. With DSA, there was shown a statistically significant (P < 0.05) higher mean value of collaterals in all BPC 157 (treatment and pre-treatment) groups. Using a micro camera, a higher total number of blood vessels in the descendent colon and uterus in BPC 157 groups in relation to controls was demonstrated. The results were confirmed by a pathohistological analysis of the tissues. The assessment of the walking test (6 h and 24 h) showed a significantly better course in all BPC 157 groups. BPC 157 showed a preventive and therapeutic effect in occlusion of the abdominal aorta with the activation of collateral circulation, which represents the potential of this peptide in the treatment of occlusive diseases.
