Von Willebrand factor is a multimeric glycoprotein synthesized in megakaryocytes and endothelial cells. Its most well-known role is in primary hemostasis where it participates in the aggregation and adhesion of platelets to the site of vascular injury. Another known function of vWF is the carrying and stabilization of factor VIII in plasma. With the development of new technology, numerous additional functions of vWF have been discovered. Participation in the regulation of angiogenesis and growth of vascular smooth muscle cells is also in the domain of vWF. The immune role is manifested in participation in the process of rolling, adhesion and migration of leukocytes and participation in the regulation of complement. VWF has a potentially important role in tumor cells where it plays a role in apoptosis and maight serve as a biomarker. Quantitative or qualitative deficiency of vWF results in the most common inherited blood clotting disorder called von Willebrand disease. The symptoms of the disease depend on the type of the disorder in the vWF itself and are dominated by mucocutaneous bleeding. VWF has a role in trombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and acquired Willebrand syndrome. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a large number of thromboembolic pathologies have been observed, and the importance of vWF in these events should be investigated.
