Understanding the relationship between epigenetics and chronic stress has created new insights into how our experiences can affect our health and well-being. When we experience stress, our body reacts by releasing hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. This is part of the body's natural "fight or flight" response, which is necessary for survival in acute situations. However, when stress becomes chronic, with constant activation of the stress response, it can have negative effects on our health. Epigenetic changes can be induced by chronic stress, affecting the way genes are expressed and regulated. One of the primary mechanisms involved in epigenetic modifications is DNA methylation, where a methyl group attaches to specific regions of DNA. DNA methylation can increase or decrease gene expression, affecting various biological processes. Chronic stress can induce epigenetic changes that affect gene expression and alter physiological processes, potentially leading to a variety of health consequences.
