Epilepsy is a chronic brain condition characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures. Enduring predisposition to generate epileptic seizures is attributed to abnormal electrical brain activity. It affects an estimated 50 million people worldwide which makes it one of the most common neurological disorders. Even though it affects individuals of all ages, it is most commonly diagnosed in children and people over the age of 65. In general, men have slightly higher incidence and prevalence of epilepsy than women. Throughout the history epileptic patients experienced social stigma associated with misunderstanding the origin of the seizures. It is important to note that up to 70% of people living with epilepsy could achieve good seizure control, if properly diagnosed and treated. Epilepsy can be challenging to diagnose even for experienced clinicians. According to the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) guidelines it is mainly defined as at least two unprovoked seizures occurring at least 24 hours apart. The gold standard diagnostic method for epilepsy is electroencephalography (EEG) which can detect abnormal electrical signals produced by damaged brain cells. Taking a detailed medical history and performing brain imaging methods contribute to making an accurate diagnosis and initiation of proper medical treatment. Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) or anticonvulsants are the most commonly used treatment for epilepsy while surgical procedures are considered if the seizure control is not achieved with medications and lifestyle changes. Comorbidity refers to the condition that coexist with a disease of interest and often requires more complex clinical management. An increasing amount of evidence suggests the significant co-occurrence of epilepsy and multiple somatic and psychiatric conditions. The presence of epilepsy-associated comorbidities, which are part of the current ILAE classification, is associated with poorer clinical outcomes, decreased quality of life and greater use of health resources.
