INTRODUCTION: Pathological processes in human organism reduce the ability to acclimatize which can cause worsening or triggering diseases. The hypothesis is that meteorological parameters have impact on the schizophrenic spectrum of diseases. AIMS OF RESEARCH: To apply the influence of meteorological factors to schizophrenic patients, and that schizophrenia is meteorotropic disease with disturbance in acclimatization. EXAMINEES AND METHODS: The study deals with the metereological parameters and their connection with admission rates for patients suffering from the schizophrenic spectrum of diseases. This is a retrospective observational study which has involved 3317 examinees sufferning from F20 to F23 diagnoses according to the ICD-10 criteria. All the examinees were patients hospitalised from 1 January to 31 December 2010. RESULTS: Seasonal pattern was found with peak in spring. Results indicate that admission rates were greater in the period with higher temperature range. There was no significant difference between types of winds, with negative correlation with wind strength. Correlation with with cyclonic activity was observed but not with humidity, atmospheric pressure and cloudiness. Daily temperature features prominently as a predictive factor for the increase in admission rates (R2=0.006; F(1.1502)=9.264; P=0.002). CONCLUSION: Results of the study confirm the impact of meteorological parameters on schizophrenic spectrum of diseases, and the hypothesis that schizophrenia is meteorotropic disease with disturbance in acclimatization.
