The hybrid power trains implies combined operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor, which results in an increase in the level of internal combustion engine efficiency and a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. The high fuel price and high CO2 emissions are two main reasons for the growing popularity of hybrid vehicles that is expected to continue in the future In this final thesis, advantages and disadvantages of conventional and hybrid propulsion systems are analyzed. Furthermore, hybrid propulsion systems are described and their classification according to hybridization level and construction presented. Functioning of the power-branched hybrid, generally realized through the planetary gearbox, has been explained on the example of the Toyota hybrid vehicle. Next, the possibility of choosing the suitable hybrid vehicle for city and inter-city traffic by using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been presented. Nowadays, the rapid development and production of hybrid propulsion systems along with the tendency towards improving conventional propulsion systems are targeted at reducing fuel consumption and, consequently, greenhouse gas emissions. In line with current technical achievements, hybrid propulsion systems seem to be the best possible solution on the automotive industry market at the moment.
