Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that mainly manifests in later life with a generalized slowing of movement (bradykinesia) and at least one other symptom of resting tremor or rigidity. Other associated features are loss of smell, sleep dysfunction, mood disorders, excessive salivation, constipation, and periodic uncontrolled limb movements in sleep. This activity provides an overview of the pathophysiology, presentation and diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and emphasizes the role of the interprofessional team in its management. Falls in people suffering from Parkinson's disease are a frequent phenomenon, and the consequences of falls can lead to the disability of the patient himself. The frequency of falls generally increases with the progression of the disease, especially during the early and middle stages. Risk factors for falls are: history of previous falls, freezing of gait, impaired balance and orthostatic hypotension. The nurse's role is to assess the patient's stability, gait, risk of falling, and through her interventions to provide the patient with a safe environment, educate the patient about risk factors for a possible fall, and teach the patient how regular exercise can affect their own stability and restore muscle tone.
