Objectives: The aim of this research is to demonstrate the influence of the most commonly used chemicals in pathohistology (formalin, xylene, ethyl alcohol) on human health and the environment. The aim is to suggest replacement of these chemicals with chemicals of better toxicological profile and to suggest re-use of chemicals to reduce the amount of hazardous medical waste. Material and Methods: The data on the toxicological properties of chemicals from the European Chemicals Agency and applicable regulations on hazardous chemicals and hazardous medical waste have been used in this research. The most commonly used reagents were compared to various reagents from different companies worldwide that produce reagents for diagnostic histopathology. The existence of chemicals that could serve as a substitute were examined, under the condition that they show the same or better efficiency in the use for diagnostic purposes. Conclusion: Formalin as a fixative may be replaced by glyoxal and xylene as a clearing agent may be replaced by aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as alkanes, C11-15-iso. Formalin, xylene and ethyl alcohol could be recycled through distillation with the help of equipment for this purpose. Packaging containing these three most commonly used reagents are also not to be rejected, but could be re-used. You can use reusable containers where the amount of waste and single-use packaging could be reduced.
