Karstic springs are unique in their composition of invertebrate communities, having specific strategies of nutrient cycling, as well as having diverse morphology. For all of these reasons, within recent ecological concepts, they are considered to be separate independent ecosystems. Both investigated karstic springs of the Gacka River, Majerovo and Tonkovića Vrilo, are characterized as limnocrenous or lake-like springs. A year-round seasonal investigation was conducted from January to October 2014 and samples were taken according to modified AQEM protocol in order to assess the macrozoobenthos community assemblages and abundance. In total 70 subsamples of macrozoobenthos were collected at dominant inorganic and organic substrates along the 100 meters of the each spring head. All physicochemical parameters were significantly different between springs. Annual water temperature oscillations in both springs did not exceed 1 °C, confirmed typical eucrenal conditions. The dominant organic substrate was phytal with submerged macrophytes, while the dominant inorganic substrate was psamopelal. Macroinvertebrate community composition indicates a clear domination of isopod and amphipod crustaceans on both springs. According to macroinvertebrate composition, abundance, species diversity and analyzed physicochemical water properties, the water quality of the both springs was assessed as a good. Information on researched and neighboring springs are essential for estimates species richness and productivity in the whole Gacka River catchment as well as in the each subcatchment.
