Nanoporous materials and membranes in aqueous environment may have diverse technical applications, from power generation and salt-water purification to advanced concepts like DNA sequencing. These are all related to the ability of small ions to pass through the pores and the selectivity that stems from the small size of the pores. We studied electrical transport properties of nanoporous alumina (Al2O3) membranes in aqueous environment. This nanoporous dielectric is formed after annealing of Ge quantum dot lattice in alumina matrix, initially presented in the matrix via magnetron sputtering deposition. Conductivity measurements were performed on membrane in electrolyte solution (NaCl) at various concentration ranging from 1uM to 1M. Membrane was mounted in a polymer flowcell and DC and AC conductivity (at 1 MHz) was measured. As a control we also measured the cell with the membrane removed. We found no effect of the membrane on the small ion flow – conductivity was linearly proportional to the concentration of the added salt. The saturation at the nominally low concentrations of added salt we have simply ascribed to contamination of the flow cell with the ions leaking from the cell construction materials. Testing with two different measurement cells we managed to lower the contaminants concentration for two orders of magnitude. This, rather trivial result we relate to a similar result by Feng et al. (Nature 2015) where the saturation was ascribed to the surface charge of the nanopore membrane. In order to check for the lack of influence of the membrane on the transport in the conductance cell we performed a dielectric spectroscopy study (frequency range 100Hz -100MHz) which provides a measure of the nanopore sizes in the membrane. That is, the relaxation times of the modes detected by DS reflect the process of rearrangement of the added salt ions within the confined space of the pores under the influence of the external AC field. Einstein- Smoluchowski diffusion equation relates the relaxation time and the characteristic size of the pores – we obtain about 100nm. Such pores are rather large and are not expected to show small ion selectivity and other qualities of nanopores that occur for sizes of 1-10 nm.
