In the last few decades scientists were investigating nuclear processes of relevance for the synthesis of heavy elements, including gold, and possible environments in the universe where these processes could occur. Most of the gold found in nature is a stable isotope 197Au and its nucleus is rich in neutrons which makes the metal heavy. It is known that gold does not originate from the Earth, but it also does not originate from the fusion in the stars. In order to create elements heavier than 56Fe, iron being the final product of the fusion in the stars, the process of neutron capture is required. Moreover, it is perceived that the process of rapid neutron capture (r-process) that takes place in a high-entropy neutron-rich region represents the process responsible for the creation of heavy elements. Locations in the universe that match required conditions are found within the environment of explosions of stars such as type II supernovae and neutron stars mergers. Due to explosive events accompanying the synthesis of gold, newly formed atomized gold is distributed throughout the universe, and it can even reach the Earth. During the evolution of a type II supernova, relevant environment for the nucleosynthesis include neutron-rich area known as “hot bubble”, which arises just before the star explodes, and the neutrino wind that adds up to the star's explosion and releases the material rich in baryons which enables the r-process to take place. In the neutron star mergers neutrino driven wind is also observed, but as a direct consequence of the collision nucleosynthesis also occurs in dynamically ejected matter. This work describes and compares the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements, as well as gold, via the r-process that takes place within before mentioned environments in the universe.
