Modern society is faced with increasingly bigger and more complex changes that have a major impact on the structure and development of the family. The aim of this paper is to present the impact of social events and the factors that have influenced the formation of the Croatian family policy. Therefore, demographic changes, legislative framework, and different legislative measures, whose sole purpose is to facilitate and encourage family life, are being scrutinized. The aforementioned is interpreted through Lewis', Gauthier's, and Leitner's typology of family politics. It has been shown that the Croatian population is on the decline, as well as the ratio of women in the fertile age. At the same time, the share of elderly is increasing. Furthermore, since the independence, the Croatian legislature tends to regulate family questions. Today’s legislature is guided by the European guidelines and hence the gender equality and balancing between family life and work are being discussed. However, in Croatia, the focus is on the financial aid such as maternity and parental leave as well as the child benefit. On the other hand, services for children are neglected even though their development would provide the best results for achieving the main goal in which parents (especially woman) could pursue their careers and, at the same time, perform the parental responsibilities.
