Given the current process of population ageing in Croatia, like in the rest of the EU member states, it is no wonder that the topic of old age has risen in importance in everyday conversation. Different demographic projections point to a significant rise in the percentage that older people will make up in the total population in the coming decades. This opens up different questions about the way we look at ageing and old age, about the way we treat older people taking into consideration existing age based stereotypes and prejudice, and about the role older people should have in the workplace. Age based discrimination is a very widespread phenomenon of not recognizing and limiting the rights of certain people solely because of their age. This phenomenon is present in the workplaces of almost all countries, which can be seen by the numerous research papers published in the EU member states, as well as in other places. In this thesis, wanting to closely examine this phenomena, I tried to cite and analyze some of this research conducted in the United Kingdom, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Germany, the United States, and Croatia. Age based discrimination in the has only been strengthened by the current coronavirus pandemic given the higher risk of health complications and mortality present in older workers. Keeping this in mind, it is important to mention the different resources that are available to the victims of discrimination, as well as the legislative framework of the EU and Croatia put in place to protect the rights of the workers.
