New poverty is a transition from a relatively safe way of life in a relatively uncertain and precarious way of life. New poverty is a form of financial uncertainty and debt. In the present day the theme of the new poverty is becoming more important precisely because it represents a new class of poor people and new problems with which such individuals and families carry unlike the traditional poor citizens. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the concept of new poverty in the Republic of Croatia. In order to get the results of the conducted qualitative research based on interviews with participants of research with the aim of gaining insight into their individual perspective and their experience. Research results include 25 categories, of which 7 categories refer to circumstances in which the participants in the study met the risk of poverty while 13 categories refer to strategies to cope with the new poverty. The remaining five categories represent the personal goals of the survey participants or changes in the system to which they aspire. It explains the ways in which the new poor cope with the unfavorable financial situation. We also explained the role of social welfare and through the practical implications we tried to indicate possible changes to the profession of social work which social workers as professional workers should advocate and apply in their work. As a conclusion we proposed a better targeting of resources and rational use of public expenditure, government reform, changes to the Forced payment law of the Republic of Croatia and prevention of the problem of indebtedness.
