Informed consent is a fundamental principle of medical ethics and a legal requirement in most countries around the world. It provides patients with the opportunity to be active participants in their treatment and ensures respect for patient autonomy and the right to make decisions about their own health. Informed consent is a process in which the physician provides the patient with all relevant information about the proposed medical procedure or treatment, including its purposes, potential risks, benefits, alternatives, and expected outcomes. There are numerous legal sources that address the right to informed consent that Croatian legislation has incorporated these standards into its laws. Therefore, it can be said that informed consent in the Republic of Croatia follows international standards. The regulation of informed consent may have certain specificities regarding the individuals to whom it applies, such as children, persons with mental disorders, and Jehovah's Witnesses. The importance of informed consent also stems from its legal protection. In the Law on Obligations and in the Criminal Code, this protection is provided generally through other institutes, but in the Law on Patient Rights, we find specific legal norms related to the institute of informed consent.
