The topic of this thesis is the appeal procedure in criminal procedural law. Procedure on appeal is regulated by the Criminal Procedure Act of 2008. Before the adoption of the current Criminal Procedure Act, the appeal procedure was refulated by the Criminal Code from 1993 and the Criminal Code from 1997. The paper will analyze the amendments of older laws and valid provisions of CPA/2008. The paper describes the criminal procedure in general, legal remedies, international documents, with special emphasis on the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. The paper analyzes some of the judgments of the ECtHR against the Republic of Croatia which concerning appeal proceedings and violations of the Convention, namely: Gjurašin v. Croatia, Jeans v Croatia, Kaić and others v. Croatia, Zahirović v. Croatia, Arps v. Croatia, Kobaš v. Hrvatska. Main part of the paper focuses on the description of the course of the appeal procedure according to to the current CPA/2008 which consists of: filing an appeal, reasons for filing an appeal, content appeals, deadlines for filing an appeal, proceedings of the second-instance court, decisions of the second-instance court, notification of the parties about the decision of the second-instance court.
