New environmental regulations and the increasing ecological awareness of consumers, as well as increasing market demand have encouraged the industry to find new techniques for wastewater treatment. The sugar industry, one of the largest emitter of environmental pollutants, is creating significant amounts of wastewater that is characterized by high amount of suspended solids, colloids and high molecular weight materials. One of the effective ways of solving the problem of wastewater in the sugar industry is the application of membrane technology. In this paper is examined the possibility of purification of the wastewater from sugar industry with microfiltration whereby permeate passes through the membrane and becomes available for recycling and reuse in the process of sugar production. Microfiltration of the effluent is accomplished using tubular ceramic membranes with a pore size of 200 nm, the transmembrane pressure in the range of 1 to 3 bar and a flow rate of the effluent from 50 to 150 L/h. Therefore a static mixer was used in order to create turbulence and improve the permeate flux. Permeate flux was continuously monitored during the microfiltration and after 90 minutes of microfiltration it reached 50 to 70 L/m2h. Due to microfiltration of the wastewater from the sugar industry, there was achieved a decrease in turbidity by 99%, reduction in COD of up to 20%, reducing the conductivity to 20%, while the suspended particles were totally removed.
