Landslides pose a serious problem in almost all parts of the world as they can cause significant economic and social losses. Landslides investigation and spatial terrain zonation with regards to the landslide susceptibility is carried out to prevent the formation of new landslides and to reduce the consequences. Although there are currently no comprehensive maps of landslide hazards available for the country’s area, the Government of the Republic of Croatia has recently adopted a decision on the establishment of a working body that, amongst other, foresees the assessment of the landslide risk on the national level. The aim of this paper was to create a landslide susceptibility map of the area of the Republic of Croatia, which would give an insight into the spatial probability of the occurrence of future landslides. The input data that were processed and analyzed (i.e. factors) were the lithology, slope gradient and land usage map. The output, landslide susceptibility map, was made by an indirect heuristic method according to which each factor and factor’s classes are assigned empirical weight values that indicate the influence of a particular class and factor on the possibility of the landslide occurrence. Five different susceptibility maps were made according to scenarios that differ in the factor’s weight value. The produced maps were then verified by comparing them with the digitized landslide inventory. According to the statistical data obtained by verification and empirical criteria, a final landslide susceptibility map of the Republic of Croatia was presented. It can be used as a basis for further research or input information for local, regional and national administration, especially in the domain of construction, urban planning and civil and environmental protection.
