Knowing the ship's resistance is a basic prerequisite for choosing a ship's propulsion engine that will deliver enough power to the propeller to move the ship at a certain speed. The ship's speed is a quantity that is agreed upon with the client in the contract. If the ship is too slow, the shipyard pays expensive penalties. That is why the ship's resistance is an important item when designing a ship. In this paper, the ship's resistance will be calculated, in the fully loaded state and in the ballast state, using the MARAD and Holtrop 1984 methods, and the results of those two methods will be compared. The ship for which the resistance is calculated has a default load capacity of 5000 tons, and other dimensions and coefficients will be selected so that the ship enters the geometric characteristics of the model from the MARAD method. Other sizes were determined by dimensionless coefficients from MARAD, and the resulting sizes were used for calculation using the Holtrop 1984 method. Holtrop 1984 is a method in which the ratios of the ship's geometric sizes are not of crucial importance, and for this reason the ship's geometry is determined by the default ratios of the MARAD method. The residual resistance coefficients of the MARAD method are extracted from the graphs of the method. The calculation of the resistance coefficients as well as the amount of resistance by both methods was performed in the Microsoft Excel program. Calculations show that using two different methods with the same input values, different values ​​of the ship's resistance are obtained. However, in order to know which method is more accurate, one should have the results of the ship's test driving resistance in nature. Therefore, it is not possible to evaluate which method is closer to the true values.
