Ultraviolet light-induced skin lesions include varied clinical entities. Due to its damaging effect to DNA and their biological activity, UV-B radiation is the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer. Although UV-A radiation is the main component of ultraviolet radiation, it is less biologically active than UV-B. UV-A radiation has a substantial role in photoaging. Clinical manifestations of acute UV light-induced skin lesions depend on the amount of energy absorbed in a single dose and skin phototype. Acute UV light-induced skin lesions include the following: erythema, sunburn, photosensitivity reactions and idiopathic photodermatoses. Chronic UV-light induced skin lesions are the result of long-term and continuous exposure to UV radiation. The penetration of UV-radiation, especially UV-A rays, cause the damage of the elastic and collagen fibers, which results in the premature aging of the skin. Prolonged human exposure to solar UV radiation may result in pre-invasive and invasive skin lesions. Chronic UV light-induced skin lesions include the following: actinic keratoses, actinic cheilitis, and basal cell carcinoma, spinocellular carcinoma and melanoma.
