Micro-implants are small titanium screws whose length spans from 4 to 15 mm and diameter is from 1.2 to 2.3 mm. They consist of the head, to which connective elements are attached, the neck that adheres to the gingiva and the threaded body that pierces the bone. Micro-implants are used as a temporary skeletal anchorage. Micro-screws are mechanically retained into the bone and their stability depends on the quality and quantity of the cortical bone. They can be imbedded in the interradicular space, the hard palate or the retromollar area. The advantages of micro-implants are: maximal anchorage, control of tooth movement, easy replacement, invisibility, biocompatibility and no chief complain of the patient. They are used in a wide range of dental as well as skeletal malocclusions such as class II and III, open bites, crowding, deep bites, etc. They are also used in combination with hyrax screws for the treatment of distraction osteogenesis. Micro-implants can be inserted manually with a screwdriver and ratchet, or mechanically, using a micro motor with water cooling. Their removal is easy, there is no need for anesthesia and the wound heals quickly.
