Corticosteroids are a group of hormones secreted by adrenal glands. Mineralcorticoids, glucocorticoids and adrenal androgens are secreted by the cortex while adrenaline and noradrenaline are secreted by the core of the adrenal gland. Corticosteroid medications are synthetic equivalents of natural corticosteroids with some pharmacological features emphasized and others repressed. Nowadays they are mainly used for their antiinflamatory and immunosuppressive effects. However, the usage of corticosteroids is limited because of many side effects, such as neurological, gastrointestinal, muscular, cardiovascular and dermatological disorders, osteoporosis, adrenal suppression, hyperglycemia, diabetes etc. In stomatology corticosteroids are used for appeasing pain and inflammation, also in oral diseases treatment, such as oral ulcerations, vesiculobullous lesions, oral lichen planus, hypersensitivity of dental pulp, temporomandibular disorders, anaphylaxis or other allergic reactions. Oral side effects can cause the feeling of dry mouth and altered sense of taste, appearance of Candida albicans, the feeling of dry throat, swollen lips etc.
