Stem cell research has led to new insights about the possibilities of cell therapy, which differ from surgical therapy and drug therapy. SHED are stem cells found in the exfoliated deciduous teeth of children. SHED cells are immature, unspecialized cells in the deciduous teeth that are able to grow into specialized cell types by a process known as differentiation. SHED cells multiply rapidly and grow much faster than adult stem cells, suggesting that they are less mature and they have the potential to develop into a wider variety of tissue types. Types of SHED are adipocytes, chondrocytes, osteoblasts and mesenchymal stem cells. Scientists have proved by recent studies that SHED can be used for regeneration of dental tissues and bones, in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis, liver disorders, diabetes, cardio-vascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, disorders of musculoskeletal system and neurological system, regeneration of tissue following brain and spinal cord injuries. As the number of people affected by degenerative diseases increases and well as due to overall aging of population the necessity for new therapeutical possibilities will grow. Banking of SHED shall ensure their availability in the future when they shall be most needed. Banking of SHED shall be the most efficient if they are banked while patients are young and healthy.
