Glass ionomer cement was introduced into dentistry by McLean in 1973. It is a twocomponent system based on powder and liquid. Powder contains calciumfluoroaluminosilicate glass particles, and liquid is an aqueous solution of a polyacrylic acid copolymer or a copolymer of polyacrylic and maleic or itaconic acid. The basic mechanism of polymerization is the acid-base reaction, which begins with mixing the powders and liquids. Glass ionomer cement is a bioactive material that binds to hard dental tissue by chemical or ionic bonding mechanisms. In addition, the fluoride in the composition of these materials promotes remineralization and termination of caries lesions. Due to a number of qualities such as: biocompatibility and low toxicity, good adhesion to enamel and dentin, pulp protection, reduced volumetric shrinkage and release of flora ions, which is important for caries protection, glass ionomers have found wide application in various branches of dental medicine. The main disadvantage of glass ion cement is its poorer mechanical properties compared to other restorative materials, including the tendency to abrasion. Numerous studies have proven that even the most resistant glass ionomer is still significantly inferior as a material in abrasion resistance of composite resins. Certain processes and agents can significantly improve the resistance of the cement to abrasion.
