The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of attitudes and perceptions of the public as well as students of social, natural, biomedical and technical fields of science according to the importance of the profession of education.The research tasks were: 1) to explore and analyse literature together with available and relevant research on the profession of an educator, the role of educators in the overall development of the child and the competences of the educator and 2) to carry out empirical research and analyse the obtained data. The thesis is divided into two major units. The first is the theoretical explanation of the educational profession, the development of early and pre-school education in the Republic of Croatia and the theoretical background of educational competence, while in the second part the data of empirical research are presented. The following three hypotheses have been set: H1: Students of other faculties perceive the pre-school profession as unimportant, H2: Students of other faculties underestimate the education of educators and H3: Students from other faculties believe that no special knowledge is required for the job of the educator.The study included 217 undergraduate and graduate students in social, natural, bio - medical and technical fields of science. They filled out an online questionnaire anonymously and voluntarily in the period from January to March 2017.Out of a total of 217 students, 67% of them do not have a person who is a kindergarten teacher. The results were processed through the Google Statistical Program. According to the basic research results, it can be stated that all three hypotheses have been dropped because students of other faculties are see the pre-school profession as important, do not underestimate the profession of kindergarten teachers, and consider that the work is important and requires special knowledge and skills and their continuous development and upgrading.
