The goal of this research was to determine what the society is doing for the children with Down syndrome. The research was based on two hypotheses, the first stating that teachers are familiar with Down syndrome but do not consider themselves sufficiently competent to work with them proficiently and second hypotheses states that parents do not find the support of the local community to be sufficient. The research involved 88 teachers and 22 parents from the Varaždin County, Međimurje County, and City of Zagreb. An interview was also conducted with the president of Zagreb and Čakovec Down Syndrome Association. Even though the main disadvantage of the research was the lack of participants, findings confirmed both hypothesis. The results have shown that teachers and parents are familiar with Down syndrome. In terms of their competencies while working with children with Down syndrome, opinions are divided and the majority believe that they would not be able to work with them properly. Despite of the fact, the majority of them would accept children with Down syndrome in their classes. Furthermore, they support integration of children with Down syndrome into regular pre-school and school programs, however, their integration into kindergartens/ schools on national level in the Republic of Croatia is still considered insufficient. Parents, even though finding support within their families, mostly have limited choices in their local community and feel that the government is not taking sufficient measures to help children with Down syndrome. The majority of parents have experienced their child being rejected from at least one kindergarten/ school. Due to their persistency and by not giving up, their children are enrolled in regular kindergarten and school programs today. They do not consider teachers competent enough, and both, parents and teachers agree that kindergartens/ schools in the Republic of Croatia are still not integrating enough children with Down syndrome. Interviews with Mrs. Nalatija Belošević and Mrs. Višnja Horvat confirmed that parents indeed encounter problems while integrating their children into regular kindergartens/ schools and that even though nowadays situation is better than in previous years, there are still many disadvantages, problems and drawbacks in the way the government and the whole community approach children with Down syndrome.
