The fundamental need for movement and physical activity in the modern world is becoming neglected so satisfaction, fun and pleasure are found in different kinds of passive activities. Outdoor activities and physical exercise are becoming forgotten human needs and it is important to bring them back to the spotlight. In this thesis, mountaineering is presented as a form of physical exercise in nature whose proper application has an important role and whose quality use depends on conscience and responsibility of each individual. The stay and activities in the mountains have long term benefits for physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of children and youth. Many scientists agreed that nature is the missing variable for the generation followed by dynamic and fast technological advancement, but the lack of research with focus on children shows that this topic is still not taken seriously enough. Research conducted in Croatia are focused more on motor development and sport activity of children and less on mountaineering with children which this thesis tries to correct. Mountaineering as a recreational activity with the goal of developing ecological awareness and awareness of ones health is a reachable and accessible answer for ensuring bigger physical activity in children. This thesis is showing in detail the way of interesting children in the mountains and enabling them with safe and successful field trip to the mountains with the goal of preserving personal physical and mental health and most importantly, developing the sense of respect for nature’s benefits and nature itself.
