The theme of this master thesis is the Down syndrome. The goal of it is to find out more about this most common genetic disorder. Down syndrome is caused by a random error in cell division that results in the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. Another purpose is to find out more about what children with Down syndrome are like and what they can do so that ways could be found for them to be integrated into the society and in the education system. The first chapter is about the Down syndrome in general – what causes the syndrome, what is the right term, syndrome through the history and possible health issues caused by it. Also, information about delivery, mortality, frequency, risk factors will be introduced. The second part of the thesis is about pupils with Down syndrome, how they’re integrated and in how far they are able to comprehend the curriculum. Valid regulations considering people with special needs will be brought to attention. After that, we are coming to the part about Nives, a girl who has Down syndrome and who I was observing in class. The last part of this thesis is dedicated to the game as a helping factor while learning, to Croatian Association for Down Syndrome and to the prejudices and the truth about the disease. Race is here not a factor, and Down syndrome can occur in every family, no matter the parent’s health, social status or the way of living. It’s important to better understand the disease so that a better care could be provided to people with this disease and to their families, so that they can become a more active part of the society.
