Diabetes mellitus, a chronic, autoimmune disease, thanks to the progress of medicine and technology in the last couple of decades, provides patients with better health care and better regulation of the disease. Nurses play a significant role in the education of sick people. Adequate education by health professionals provides patients with a better understanding of the disease and various ways of regulation that improve the quality of life for people suffering from diabetes mellitus type 1. The areas of education in which a nurse educates a patient with diabetes are: proper nutrition, drawing up a menu and calculating carbohydrates, application insulin therapy, self-regulation methods using new technological achievements, physical activity and foot hygiene. Type 1 diabetes mellitus is also called juvenile diabetes due to its higher frequency in the younger population, and therefore certain topics that adolescents may encounter, from choosing a life vocation to going to college, are presented. The daily challenges of people with diabetes can lead to burnout, and this condition is called diabetes burnout. The paper presents the case of an adolescent girl with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus and possible nursing diagnoses and interventions.
