The aim of this final paper was to show the role of the toy as a means of learning and entertainment, important for the child's life and growing up. Toys are described in more detail, classification, importance and functions of toys, and prerequisites that need to be met for quality application of the toy in kindergarten and in the family. The importance of play through the child's life is also presented, especially for the development of the child's creativity, imagination, social, emotional, mental and psychomotor skills and abilities. The last chapters describe traditional children's toys from the Croatian heritage, which with their contribution enrich the child's play environment with original, handmade toys from all over the Republic of Croatia. The value of old wooden toys, which may have a higher intangible value than today's, sophisticated children's toys, was highlighted. Finally, a workshop for parents was presented, emphasizing the importance of educating parents to use games and toys during the child's growth, the role of parents in the child's play process, as well as the need to choose quality toys and play materials appropriate to his individual abilities and interests.
