The genre of country music was linguistically not much analysed in previous research papers, so for my analysis I took some linguistic studies into account that looked at other genres like rock and pop music. I have chosen this genre to research, because there are not many studies about this topic and I think its potential for scientific research is great. It was assumed that the opus of Johnny Cash belongs to the genre of country music, but that neither the topics typical of this genre nor the metaphors about love were various. It was furthermore assumed that the metaphors that are used in the country music lyrics and by Johnny Cash are not used in a creative way. The hypothesis was tested by comparing the corpus of Johnny Cash (CJC) and the corpus of country music (CCM) with each other and with other corpora like GBoP4, COCA5, ICE-GB6. I compiled the CJC and CCM myself using various web-sites. For the CJC I choose all the songs that were written by Johnny Cash himself and sorted them diachronically by the year of their first appearance. To compile the CCM I took all the song from the list of the top 100 country songs from the magazine Rolling Stone. From this list I chose all songs except the ones that were exclusively instrumental, or their text was not written in English. For my analysis I used the program AntConc and on the basis of the obtained results I was able to compare some aspects like the most often used lemmas, nouns and content words and to compare the data diachronically. I analyzed also the metaphors and to witch degree they can be sorted into the already existing categories, and what can be concluded on the basis of the way they are used in the CJC and CCM. In my study I concluded that the lyrics of Johnny Cash are a part of the country music genre. The hypothesis that the metaphors used in the songs are repeated frequently and that they are not used in a creative way was not confirmed. Looking at the analysis it is obvious that there are a lot of metaphors to be found in the CCM and that they are creative, but the number is fewer in the CJC and, considering the size of the CJC in comparison to the size of the CCM, the used metaphors are not creative.
