The incidence of malignant skin tumors is on the rise. The number of new patients doubles every eight to ten years in most European countries, so the growth rate is higher than in any other type of cancer. Therefore, any skin lesion that is different and altered is an indication for dermatological examination. Most skin changes are benign and do not need to be removed. A number of changes are malignant skin tumors and among them, basaliomas have the highest incidens followed by planocellular carinomas and melanomas with the smalles incidences for Merkel cell tumors. Prevention and early detection of skin tumors is essential. A skin tumor recognized at an early stage can be cured, while at an advanced stage treatment is difficult, quality of life is reduced, and outcome is uncertain. Diagnosis is made on the basis of anamnesis, clinical and dermatoscopic examination, incisional or excisional biopsy along with pathohistology examination, and radiological diagnostics. The nurse, as a part of medical team, has an impact in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of malignant skin tumors.
