Diese Masterarbeit untersucht die zerbrechliche Männlichkeit in Theodor Fontanes Roman Effi Briest und analysiert, wie gesellschaftliche Normen und Erwartungen die Entwicklung verschiedener Männlichkeitstypen beeinflussen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Männlichkeit, die sich strikt nach gesellschaftlichen Vorschriften und Regeln richtet, nicht bestehen kann. Themen wie Ehe, Freundschaft und Ehre werden im Kontext der Geschlechterforschung, insbesondere der Männerforschung, betrachtet. Fontane nutzt die Geschichte von Effi und den Ehebruch, um seine Kritik an der Gesellschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts zu verdeutlichen. Diese Kritik zielt nicht auf die Untreue oder das Alter der Protagonistin ab, sondern darauf, wie brüchig und schwach die gesellschaftlichen Strukturen tatsächlich sind. Das angeblich starke System, das den Staat sichern soll, entpuppt sich als trügerische Fassade. Fontane zeigt in Effi Briest nicht nur die Zerbrechlichkeit der Gesellschaft als Ganzes, sondern auch die der einzelnen Männer, die durch die starren gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen ihrer eigenen Zerrissenheit ausgeliefert sind.

This master's thesis examines the fragile masculinity in Theodor Fontane's novel Effi Briest and analyzes how social norms and expectations influence the development of different types of masculinity. It becomes clear that masculinity that strictly follows social rules and regulations cannot exist. Topics such as marriage, friendship and honor are considered in the context of gender studies, especially men's studies. Fontane uses the story of Effi and adultery to illustrate his criticism of 19th century society. This criticism is not aimed at the protagonist's infidelity or age, but at how fragile and weak the social structures actually are. The supposedly strong system that is supposed to secure the state turns out to be a deceptive façade. In Effi Briest, Fontane not only shows the fragility of society as a whole, but also that of the individual men, who are at the mercy of their own fragility due to the rigid social expectations.
