This thesis offers an extensive review of the haematological evaluation of lizards, emphasizing their unique physiological adaptations and the implications for veterinary medicine. With over 8,000 species, lizards exhibit a remarkable range of morphological and ecological diversity. Their ectothermic nature, which relies on external heat sources for thermoregulation, significantly influences their haematological parameters, impacting their activity, metabolism, and overall health. This review consolidates existing research on lizard haematology, focusing on critical parameters such as erythrocyte and leukocyte counts, haemoglobin concentration, and hematocrit levels and aims to enhance our understanding of lizard physiology and contribute to the advancement of veterinary science through an in-depth exploration of their haematological characteristics. The study addresses the challenges and techniques involved in diagnosing lizards through haematology, highlighting the necessity of manual methods like the Natt-Herrick technique for precise leukocyte quantification. It also examines both intrinsic and extrinsic factors that affect haematological profiles, including species, age, sex, environmental conditions, and stress. By understanding these factors, the thesis stresses the need for speciesspecific reference ranges and customized diagnostic approaches in veterinary practice. The findings of this review underscore the essential role of haematology in understanding the adaptive strategies of lizards, ensuring their health and conservation, and appreciating the intricate balance of life in diverse ecosystems.
