Sažetak (engleski) | Giardiasis is a parasitic disease caused by protists within Giardia genus which parasite on the surface of the small intestine mucous coat of animals and humans and is often clinically manifested by diarrhea. G. duodenalis is spread all over the world and is described as the most common parasite of the digestive system in dogs. It is of zoonotic potential and the invasion comes after ingestion of cysts. During the period from 2015. to 2017., when 2767 dog feces samples were examined, 699 (25.3%) samples were positive to giardiasis. In younger dogs, the prevalence of the giardiasis was 57.1% and in adult dogs 23.3%. In pets, the prevalence was 16.9%, and in dogs agglomerations 37.2%. Coinvasion with other endoparasites, often with Isospora spp., T. canis and T. vulpis, was also very common. According to the clinical signs, dogs most often had diarrhea, in 55.3% cases, 35,9% were asymptomatic and 8.8% of dogs had soft feces. After the first drug administration, 79,0% of dogs were cured and 14.6% were cured after the second drug administration. For 6.4% of dogs it was necessary to take 3 or more treatment cycles. The medication therapy is not sufficient enough to cure the giardiasis. The hygiene measures are also required and the success of the treatment should be checked regularly. |
