Plant-origin toxins can cause intoxication in wild birds, captive birds and pets. Most significant plant-origin toxins are algae toxins, plant toxins, mycotoxins (aflatoxins, Fusarium toxins: T-2 toxin, vomitoxin, fumonisin along with nephrotoxic ochratoxin and citrinin) and zootoxins (venomous animals, bacterial toxins). Depending on a category of birds and the diet there are many possible ways of exposure to certain toxins. Clinical signs of the same intoxication often manifest differently according to the bird species along with the occurring pato-histological changes which make the determination of intoxication harder in most cases. Besides that, sampling in order to diagnose the intoxication is complex because of the limited amount of sample and due to unavailability of specific tests used for certain toxins. The treatment of bird intoxication starts off with stabilization of the patient after which follows decontamination of the gastrointestinal tract or skin and application of non-specific adsorbents, specific antidotes and increase in excretion from an organism with necessary support therapy. Majority of intoxications are not lethal but often interfering with animal’s reproductive and breeding abilities. Pets are often exposed to toxins on a daily basis so it is very important to educate the pet owners to recognize toxicants and the ways they can prevent it from coming in contact with the pet to prevent intoxication.
