The fat dormouse (Glis glis L.) is Croatian native game species from the family of Gliridae. It is spread throughout the territory of the Republic of Croatia, with the largest population in the areas of Lika and Gorski kotar, where it is traditionally hunted using specially designed traps. Its meat can be used as food and its fat is traditionally used for wound treatment. Since the fat dormouse is a wild animal, we do not have much insight into its parasite fauna. Some of these parasites could possibly be zoonotic parasites that humans could get invaded with when consuming dormouse's meat. The aim of this study was to identify parasites present in the gastrointestinal tract of the fat dormouse and determine their prevalence. I examined 47 samples of the digestive system of fat dormice that were collected during the regular hunting season in the area of open common hunting ground no. VIII /110 - "Crna Gora". Nematode Paraheligmonina gracilis and cestode Armadolepis myoxi were identified and 87,23% of the dormice were found to be invaded with at least one of these two parasites. P. gracilis occurred in 87,23%, and A. myoxi in 21,27% of samples, always in co-invasion with P. gracilis. The Chi-squared test concluded that there was a statistically significant difference (chi-square = 19,08) in the total invasion with P. gracilis compared to A. myoxi . Odds ratio (OR) showed that the invasion with A. myoxi is 1,64 times more likely to occur in male dormice than in female (CI 95%; 0,4025 – 6,7051). The increase of prevalence of P. gracilis was established on the territory of the Republic of Croatia. None of these two parasites have zoonotic potential.
